A 10-step guide …

of how to become an international student

Preparing to move to Australia as an international student involves many steps and interactions with different parties. This guide helps you understand the 10 major steps to take before arriving in Australia to undertake your studies.

1. Contact us for an initial discussion, so we can understand your current situation, experience and future goals

You may be physically inside or outside Australia at the time of thinking about becoming an Australian international student with plenty of questions that need answering before taking the first steps. At this point, it is best to contact us and explain your situation, so we can help you quickly plan the best path forward.

In our initial discussion, we will cover the following topics:

  • who and where you are

  • your reasons and motivations for wanting to study in Australia

  • would you like to come to Australia alone or with your partner and/or child(ren)

  • your current English level

  • your experience (academic and/or professional)

  • your subject and future profession of interest (if you are unsure, we can help you decide what may be best for you)

  • any other questions or concerns you have

2. Receive your personalised pack and choose which course to to apply for.

Based on our initial consult, we will send you a personalised information pack with recommendations of suitable subjects, pathways, and colleges to help you weigh up the pros and cons of various options before making a decision. This pack will include:

  • a student profile form

  • course details: duration, timetable, price and future academic and professional options

  • college details: history, location, facilities

You can then ask us any further questions and let us know your enrolment choice.

3. Send to us your relevant information so we can apply for enrolment on your behalf

We will send you a request for relevant documentation to make sure we have everything we need to make a successful application on your behalf. Supporting documentation may include:

  • a copy of your passport ID

  • IELTS result (if any)

  • other academic results (if applicable)

Note: Each college will have their own refund policy relating to course fees and what happens to those fees if your student visa is rejected. We will make sure you are aware of all these details prior to you signing the application form.

4. Receive a college offer letter with the course details and relevant costs

If your application meets the criteria of the college for your chosen course, you will then receive an offer letter by the college with course details around college orientation dates, timetable, and costs involved.

5. Pay the college the relevant fees for the enrolled course

You can now accept the offer by paying the course fees to the college.

6. Receive a confirmation letter of enrolment (CoE) from the college

Upon receipt of the course fees, the college will send you a confirmation letter of enrolment (CoE). This letter is crucial, as your student visa application cannot be made without.

7. Our visa specialist will assist you in applying for a Student Visa (Subclass 500)

Working in consultation with you, we will lodge a student visa on your behalf, and for any dependents if applicable.

The wait time to receive a visa decision is usually around a couple of months, but this may change as Covid-19 border restrictions ease and visa processing times begin to lengthen. Rest assured that we will keep you informed every step of the way, notifying you of any rule changes or visa progress notifications.

8. Receive Student Visa decision for you and your dependents (if any)

There are 2 scenarios at this point:

  1. If your visa is successful, then you can proceed to step 9 and make arrangements to travel to Australia and begin your studies at the relevant time.

  2. If your visa is rejected:

    a. and you are in Australia at the time of your application submission and decision, we can assist you in applying for an AAT visa rejection review. You can wait until the visa review decision before applying for a refund.

    b. and you are outside of Australia at the time of your application submission and decision, then the AAT visa rejection review is not available to you and you can proceed to apply for a course refund.

    c. apply for refund of your college course fees based on the terms and conditions listed in your enrolment application form.

9. Purchase flights and make accommodation options

With you new Australian Student Visa grant, you can then purchase flights, making sure to arrive well before your college orientation date. We recommend arriving 1-2 weeks in advance to get the basics set up, do some sight-seeing and allowing you some time to get familiar with your new environment.

10. Arrive in Australia to begin your international student journey!

Once you arrive, we can arrange for your airport pickup and accommodation drop-off, making sure you arrive safe and sound. You will have us as a contact should you need help or guidance, as you start your new course and exciting new adventure as an international student.

We are always here to help if you have any questions or concerns.
